2012

This post is dated 3rd January 2012. It's a new year. Just a couple of days ago, a lot of people from around the world gathered in many places and ushered in the new year. There was much merry making and much new resolutions made, I'm sure.

For me, I very seldom go out and join any new year countdown. Most times, I will be at home either asleep or maybe watching TV as the year ticks away and a new one begins. For 2011, I was at home watching a Korean spy drama on DVD. Halfway watching I heard some muffled booms outside. Fireworks. So the new year has begun. After that brief distraction, I got back to my drama.

1st of January seldom mean anything really special to me. Yes, it's the start of a new calendar year. Most people see this as a new beginning. New resolutions are made and most will have been broken or abandoned before this day (3rd of Jan) is through.

For me, I do not need the beginning of a new year for me to make any resolutions. Besides if you're not totally committed to your resolution, you'll break it sooner or later. Making it on New Year's day does not give it any extra or special powers to make it stick.

If anyone wants to change desperate enough, they will take the necessary actions. It does not have to be on New Year's day. Today is the first working day of 2012. What did I do? Woke up around the same time as always. Found myself having breakfast at the same old outlet ordering the same items on the menu. This day will play more or less the same and any other working day. Nothing majorly different about it. Any of you have a significantly different start to your day?

Many of the major changes in our life happens on days that have no significance to anyone else. Take me for example. I changed my job around July last year. About 4 years ago, somewhere in September, I bought my first DSLR camera and now I'm quite into my new hobby. This new hobby of mine has had a big impact in my life. I met new friends. I learnt a new skill that may be useful in future and generally I'm happier because of this new hobby. Around six years ago, when I was waiting for the LRT to get to work one morning, I got a call from my wife who told me that I was about to be a dad for the first time. It was mind blowing and things changed after that.

So New Year's day to me is like any other day. I don't find any extra reason to go out and about and drink myself into oblivion and make hasty resolutions as the clock strikes twelve. One thing that's I'm thankful for is that I get a day off on New Year's day! Happy New Year everyone! Hope that 2012 will bring you much joy and happiness.
