April 15, 1912

97 years ago today, an incident happened and remains to this day a fascination for quite a lot of people. It was a tragedy where more than 1500 lives were lost in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

If you do not know what I am referring to, it is the sinking of the Titanic 97 years ago on her maiden voyage from London to New York.

You've seen the movie by James Cameron and you've probably heard the line, "You jump, I jump!" so many times that you've lost count. Romantic notions aside, there's still the true story of how the ship sank and took with it more than 1500 lives after it struck an iceberg. No, Jack was not there. He was a fictional character that did not exist and neither did Rose exist. What did exist was the fact that the Titanic sailed with not enough lifeboats on her to save all her passengers. Of the 2223 passengers and crew aboard, only 706 survived.

Numerous theories were put forward on why she sank. From tales of her captain that ignored numerous iceberg warnings to the curse of a mummy that she allegedly carried as cargo, all have made their rounds. Fact is, that it was a tragic accident that nobody could have predicted nor prevented. 97 years on, most of the survivors would have passed on but the legend and myth surrounding the Titanic will still live on.
